This Week
Why read the Roman phone book?
After Paul plumbed the depths of the knowledge of God for 15 chapters of Romans, he concluded by naming 29 church members and 6 groups of church members in the final chapter. Why? The Spirit wants us to know God’s Word matters, and the Spirit wants us to know God’s people matter. It’s true, we don’t know much about Tryphena and Tryphosa. But we know this: they’re in the Bible. That’s more than I can say about myself or anyone I know. Wouldn’t it be embarrassing to get to heaven, meet Tryphena, and say, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of you.” Don’t let that happen to you. Read Romans 16:1-16, do your best with the pronunciation (or just pronounce the difficult ones quickly) and join with others whose names aren’t in the Bible but are in another important book that will be opened in the future.

Worship
Resources and opportunities for you to worship
Covenant of Grace
In our next worship series, we’ll give glory to God by digging deeply into the record of Noah and the flood found in Genesis 6 – 9. Why six weeks on the flood? Next to creation, it’s the greatest geological event in the history of our world. It occupies a prominent place in the Bible. It receives more space than creation. It is referred to by many Biblical characters, writers, and by Jesus himself. May our study of God’s Word help those who are troubled by “seemingly irreconcilable conflicts between Genesis and geology.” More than that, though, in these chapters we see God’s view of sin and a demonstration of God’s mercy. Start reading Genesis 6 – 9 now to prepare for the series that begins on Thursday, September 19, and on Sunday, September 22.
Adult choir resumes September 11
Blend your voice with others to sing God’s praise. We’ll rehearse at 7 PM on Wednesdays in the Soul Café to sing for worship on:
- Sunday, September 29 (rehearsals will be September 11, 18, & 25).
- Sunday, November 3 (rehearsals will be October 16, 23, & 30).
- Sunday, December 15 (rehearsals will be December 4 & 11).
High school-aged and older are welcome to attend. Interested in participating? Email Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs.

St. Andrew has a ministry team that keeps in touch with all of our college students. This is the last call to get us those addresses. Send to mark.kjenstad@st-andrew-online.org.
Impact podcast
Where is Jesus? He’s in heaven, and he’s with you. Both say something about him. Listen to Sam Degner, a professor at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, talk about the verses in Acts 1 that speak about Jesus’ ascension. You can listen to Impact here or by searching for “Kjenstad Impact” wherever you listen to podcasts.
PowerHour
PowerHour is a children’s ministry that serves children and their caregivers. Children up to school-age are welcome. The first PowerHour of the new year is Friday, September 6, in the gymnasium. Please note the new time: 10:15 – 11:15 AM. The first theme of the year is Transportation: Things that Go! Go here to learn more about PowerHour.
Sunday morning children’s ministries
God’s Word is for all people, and that certainly includes children. St. Andrew has Sunday morning ministries that feed children from birth through high school with God’s precious Word. All of these ministries begin again on September 8. Registration is not necessary. Our lesson this week is Jesus visiting his disciples at the lake after his resurrection.

Service & Outreach
Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others
School bus route driver opportunity
The St. Andrew/Our Redeemer bus route to Lakeside Lutheran High School is looking for a driver for both before and after school routes. Every school day, you leave St. Andrew at 6:35 AM. LLHS provides a vehicle for travel back home. In the afternoon, you return to Lakeside to depart by 3:15 PM, driving the bus back to St. Andrew, arriving about 4:15 PM. No experience is required, training is provided, and test fees are paid. Contact Transportation Manager Eric Haley ( [email protected]) for more information.
St. Andrew prayer team
In 1 Timothy 2:1 Paul writes, “First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people.” Did you know that a St. Andrew team does that for you? Each week anyone can add a prayer request to his/her Connection Card or submit one online. Your prayer team prays for you or your family and friends throughout the week.
Note of gratitude
Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel was our Monthly Mission Partner in May. Below is an excerpt from a letter from Pastor Bilitz.
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of the Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel and Student Center, I would like to extend our warmest thanks for the recent gift of $4781.68. Through this gift, our ministry will be able to share Christ’s love with hundreds of college students and families from around the globe. What a blessing you continue to be for our Chapel ministry. We appreciate your generosity. Thank you!
Jon Bilitz, Campus Pastor
WELS Connection
Every month, our church body releases a video to highlight a specific project or ministry of some of our brothers and sisters in faith. Last month’s video shows just one man’s story of coming to faith in Jesus. His struggles eventually led him to a sister church in Tennessee that is part of our synod’s initiative for 100 new mission churches in ten years.

Monthly Mission Partner
Our September Mission Partner is our Ministerial Education Fund. This is St. Andrew’s effort to ease the financial burden of those attending schools that prepare them for the public full-time ministry. Right now, Kylie Roekle and Seth Veers are students at Martin Luther College, studying to be teachers, and Andrew Fritz is at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, preparing for pastoral ministry. Please pray for them and all who desire to serve in full-time public ministry roles.

Westside Christian School
A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word
We survived
It doesn’t matter if you are a student, classroom aide, teacher, or principal, there is a sense of pride and accomplishment when you are able to say, “I survived the first full week of school!” That sounds a bit trivial, but it’s true. Once that first full week of school is done, a bit of calm comes over all involved. Teachers realize they can be on their feet for an entire day. Principals are reminded of how many different decisions and situations come up in a day. Lunchroom cooks are reminded that they can make food quickly when 20 more students than anticipated expect hot lunch.
There are still things that need attention, like keeping lockers and desks clean, walking down the hallways in a semi-quiet fashion, and getting work done in a timely manner. That is all part of the school day, and we will get there eventually. But for now, let’s enjoy the fact that we have a school full of students eager to learn. We have a school full of paras, aids, teachers and staff willing to share God’s grace every day. That’s truly what Westside is all about. |
