This Week
The art of persuasion
Ever since Aristotle, authors have offered their advice on how to persuade others. Most tell you to include objective truth, show humility, care for the other, bare your feelings, etc. Persuasion is a complicated effort. If you say only empirical evidence proves anything, how do you prove that statement? If you say all we need are feelings, you’ve just created chaos. Paul stands before world powers, and his life is on the line. He lays out facts. He bares his heart. But he includes a third element in his attempt to persuade King Agrippa to believe in Christ. Aristotle and most best-selling authors miss it. Read Acts 25:23 through the end of Acts 26, meditate on it this Thursday or Sunday with your fellow saints, and find what it takes to persuade others, and maybe yourself, to believe.

Worship
Resources and opportunities for you to worship
Milestones
Elsie Gnewuch, mother of Kim Gnewuch, one of our teachers, received the crown of glory on Tuesday evening. Her Christian funeral will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Oconomowoc, this Saturday at 1 PM. Visitation will precede the funeral beginning at 11 AM.
Adult Choir returns September 21
Blend your voice with others to sing God’s praise. We’ll rehearse at 7 PM on Wednesdays in Room 115 to sing for worship on the following dates:
- Sunday, October 9 (rehearsals will be September 21, 28, and October 5)
- Sunday, October 30 (rehearsals will be October 12, 19, and 26)
High-school-age and older are welcome to attend. Questions? Email Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs.
Sing! Virtual Conference
This past week Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs was able to virtually attend the Sing! Conference. This conference is put on each year by Keith & Kristyn Getty and emphasizes the Biblical importance of congregational singing. Several new songs and ideas were introduced over those three days, many of which will be worked into worship over the course of the next year.
Worship Check-in
If you worship on-site, please fill out the Connection Card attached to your worship folder. Online worshipers, please continue to check in here.

Nurture
Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others
Growth Groups
Fall Growth Groups have begun! If you didn’t get signed up, talk to Staff Minister for Nurture Mark Kjenstad to find out what is still available. The next sign-up period will begin in January. When you have an idea for a new Growth Group location, day, time, or topic, let Mr. KJ know.
WELS Campus Ministry
College brings about a lot of change. There is one thing that we pray stays the same, however. That one thing is faith in Jesus. WELS Campus Ministry helps college students stay connected. Click here for more information and to find a campus ministry near you!
Impact
There are over 33,000 verses in Scripture, and John 3:16 is the most well-known of all of them. How well do you really know it? Listen to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary Professor Steve Geiger share his thoughts on this beautiful gospel verse and the context around it. You can find Impact here or wherever you listen to podcasts by searching “Kjenstad Impact.”
PowerHour
A new year of PowerHour has begun! If you have a little one 3 or younger, check out this enriching ministry. PowerHour is for children and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. For more details about PowerHour, click here. The next PowerHour is September 16: Fall Farmers’ Market.
Children’s ministries
Bring your child to a Sunday morning nurture ministry. This week the walls of Jericho come falling down at God’s command.
Musikgarten | for parents (or a caregiver) and their child up to age 3 (9:20 AM)
Plugged into Jesus | Pre-K3 – grade 5 (9:20 AM)
Spark | grades 6 – 8 (9:30 AM)
All who attend grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the love he has for them. These important ministries also lay a foundation for developing lives of faithful service to our gracious Lord. No registration is required.
If you would like to serve in any of these ministries, contact Staff Minister for Nurture Mark Kjenstad.
FUEL
FUEL is a high-school-age St. Andrew Growth Group that meets Sundays at 9:30 AM. This ministry provides a place for teens to ask questions and talk about life in light of God’s Word. This week we will discuss how to get to heaven.

Service & Outreach
Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others
Window cleaning
We’re not sure how many windows there are here at St. Andrew and Westside, but we do know they need a good washing. The plan is to get those windows squeaky clean on September 17 from 9 – 11 AM. You can help. Everything you need will be provided, including donuts! Click here to join the crew!
Janitorial care positions
Volunteers fill many, many roles at St. Andrew to carry out this ministry, but some roles we pay people to do. Currently, there are three paid janitorial roles available. This isn’t the regular “heavy lifting” cleaning—we contract Badger Chemical and Supply for the whole building cleaning after school. Here is a list of the paid positions.
- Part-time daytime janitor | Throughout the school year this janitor refreshes bathrooms, completes general cleaning in the gym and sanctuary, etc.
- Temporary janitor | Until the daytime janitor role is filled, this flexible and temporary role requires mopping of the kitchen and cleaning of the sanctuary two times a week. This position is a great opportunity for high school students.
- Full-time Lead Custodian | The Lead Custodian reports to the Director of Properties, oversees the cleaning activities for both Westside Christian School and St. Andrew, schedules and manages the custodial team, orders supplies, and more.
For more information on any of these roles, or to get a position description, please contact Amy Hutter.
September Monthly Mission Partner
This month our mission partner brings us to Brandon, South Dakota. Our prayers and offerings will support a new mission congregation, Sure Foundation Lutheran Church. Pastor Craig Wilke began worship services in Brandon in 2020 with 30 members, and the Spirit has blessed Sure Foundation with 80 members today. This congregation currently worships at a golf course but is in the process of looking for land in the Brandon community. See their website for more information.
WELS Connection
Our Wisconsin Synod puts out a monthly video update on news from around the synod. Here is a link to the latest WELS Connection.

Westside Christian School
A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word
WCS fall sports
Our Westside Christian School fall sports teams are in full swing! With the growth in enrollment and increased interest among our students, this is the first year we were able to field three separate girls’ volleyball teams. If you want to attend an event and cheer on our WCS students, the schedule is posted on the bulletin board outside the gym. Our WCS soccer players also took 2nd place in their first tournament last weekend at Eastside Lutheran School. We are thankful for the many volunteers who coach and support our athletes, and the parents who drive them around and encourage all students. |

Lost and found
Thank you to Duane Ehlke for putting his skills to use in building a new organization system for lost and found items at St. Andrew/Westside Christian School! You can find the new shelf in the hallway outside the workroom. |
