This Sunday

Why Lutheran?
Martin Luther was on his way to becoming a successful lawyer in 1505 when God intervened. He became a monk, a priest, and a professor instead. But he was confused and troubled by the teaching of his church until he began to teach the Bible, especially the book of Romans. His study of Romans turned his thinking of God from an angry thunderbolt to a God of free and faithful grace. It followed then, since this gift came from the Word, that Luther would immerse himself in more of it and base all his teaching only upon it. It resulted in a warrant for his arrest, but Luther was not deterred. He translated the Bible into the German of the common people and wrote commentaries and resources for others to use in teaching the Bible, including the Catechism. He routinely came back to two central teachings: the Bible is the only authority for what we believe, and God declares the sinner good and righteous by grace through faith in Christ. No one can earn that status by good works. His teaching is often summarized by three phrases: by grace alone, by faith alone, and by the Scripture alone. We believe the same thing and are captive to the Word of God.

Stick to the Word!
What’s the most valuable thing you own? Your house or car? Your mind, legacy, or time? While these things may certainly hold some sort of value to us in our lives, the Son of God directs our attention to something else. He points us to the most valuable thing we own: the Truth. Our minds, of course, have other ideas. My mind loves distraction. It lives for it. It cannot wait to find some new thing that will pull me away from the only precious gift I’ve been given—the only gift that changes my life completely. When I begin to let go, however, Jesus is there. He’s there in love to rattle me. He’s there to bring me to repentance. He’s there to forgive me. He is there to encourage me. This weekend, let’s stay focused. Join us on Thursday at 7:00 PM or Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 AM to hold on to what matters. Stick to the Word!

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Final weeks! | Top 10 for MOM
Thank you for your continued faithfulness in providing food and goods for MOM! We are beginning to wrap up our Thanksgiving collection to provide for those in need. Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) does not refuse any person asking for help. Labeled boxes of MOM’s Top 10 items are in the atrium for you to fill until November 7. The Top 10 items are: wild rice, non-dairy shelf milk, canned coconut milk, canned mandarin oranges, canned beets, olive oil, curry powder, hot sauce, gluten-free elbow macaroni, and laundry detergent.

Another way to help is with a monetary gift. A gift of $20 provides a Thanksgiving meal for a local family. If you wish to donate a gift card, check, or cash, please place it in an offering envelope marked MOM and drop it in the collection basket or the secure drop box located at the Welcome Center. Online donations can be made here—select “Other Offering” as your designation choice.

If you have any questions about this ministry, please contact TLC member Karen Teske-Osborne. “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Stage installation
This week a stage was installed in the musician corner of the sanctuary to improve visibility along with stage boxes that include power and microphone connections. This was the last major piece of the sanctuary renovation process. Praise God for an updated space where we can better hear his Word and give him praise!

Sanctuary cleaning & reset
Are you someone who enjoys cleaning? Construction does tend to create some dust and messes which will be cleaned up this Saturday, October 30, starting at 10:00 AM. If you are interested in helping clean or resetting the musician stage, please contact Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs.

Call
Naomi is still deliberating her call to serve as music teacher and staff minister at Divine Savior in Liberty Hill, Texas. Please keep her in your prayers as she considers how and where God is calling her to serve. She welcomes any comments, thoughts, or advice from her St. Andrew family, whether in person or via email or phone. Feel free to contact her at Naomi Laabs or (920)277-4633.

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Advent by Candlelight
Christmas already? No, but it is approaching. St. Andrew women’s ministry is preparing Advent by Candlelight, a celebration of the birth of our Savior. Save the date: December 12. More details to follow.

FUEL
“Take time to read God’s Word on your own. It’s not always easy to do, but you will always receive a blessing from God.” Mrs. Hunter shared that encouragement last week while joining FUEL as a special guest. She also told the teens the highs and lows of being the wife of a pastor, talked about being a piano teacher, and brought along some treats to share.

This coming Sunday FUEL will continue discussing how teens can grow closer to God. FUEL meets at 9:30 AM every Sunday and is for all St. Andrew high school students. Reach out to Mr. KJ for more information.

Celebrate Recovery
“When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD; he brought me into a spacious place” Psalm 118:5. The writer is saying the Lord brought him to recovery. If you or a loved one is feeling “hard pressed,” consider Celebrate Recovery. Celebrate Recovery is at St. Andrew on Mondays at 6:30 PM. More information is found here. Questions about Celebrate Recovery can be sent here.

Impact—A St. Andrew podcast
The world is morally crooked, isn’t it? Always has been, always will be. Why is that? The answer is found in Genesis 3. Listen to Illinois Lutheran High School teacher Tim Rimpel explain. New Impact episodes are released every Monday. Past episodes are also available. Give Impact a listen and share this nurture resource with others. Impact is now on Apple.

Musikgarten
This music ministry is Sundays at 9:20 AM. Caregivers and infants through age three are welcome! Contact Karen Hong with your questions.

Plugged into Jesus
Home activity for “The Emmaus Road”: Have a conversation about the use of a magnifying glass, binoculars, or sunglasses. Talk about which things help us see and which things make it harder to see. Remind each other that God’s truth opens our eyes to see our Savior.

Use this link to watch a great Bible teaching video. Send the video to others by clicking the “share” icon. Reach out for a kit to ship to kids in your world!

“An Ascending Truth: Jesus Ascends” will be this week’s lesson. Who will you invite? Kids in Pre-K3 – 5 are welcome at 9:20 on Sunday mornings. Questions? Contact Jane Dew.

Middle School
The eyes of the Emmaus disciples were opened by Jesus’ teaching. How will your eyes be opened by his teaching? Grades 6 – 8 meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30. Contact Lance Hill with questions.

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Caregiver needed
A St. Andrew family is in need of a short-term volunteer caregiver for a 3-year-old during weekdays while Mom works virtually from home. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Pastor Hunter.

October Monthly Mission Partner
This upcoming Sunday is the last Sunday in October. Citrus Grove Church, our home mission in Wesley Chapel, Florida, is our October Monthly Mission Partner. This mission meets to grow people in the Word as Jesus makes hearts healthier and lives more fruitful. At Citrus Grove Church, God himself does the gardening. Donations to Citrus Grove Church go directly to support the church’s work in southern Florida.

November Monthly Mission Partner | WELS Prison Ministry
“Remember those in prison . . .” Hebrews 13:3. This November we are partnering once again with WELS Prison Ministry, a group that is serving more than 35,000 incarcerated inmates with the gospel. There is great hunger for the Word of God with those who are in prison. For more information about how you can help, contact WELS Prison Ministry Administrator Dave Hochmuth.

St. Andrew Giving Tree
Beginning Thursday, November 4, you will have an opportunity to participate in our 2021 Giving Tree. We will be giving gift cards to families this year, allowing them to purchase gifts before Christmas. Numbered gift tags (families’ names are kept anonymous) will soon be available on a Christmas Giving Tree table outside the Service and Outreach office in the atrium. You will be able to pick a tag and buy a gift card for just one person or for a whole family. Thank you!

Mission Trips 2022
Do you find yourself enthusiastically discussing what is going on around the globe? Do you enjoy working with people? Are you mission minded? Our planning team has set tentative mission locations for 2022: Greater Madison, Wisconsin; Sure Foundation Church, Brandon, South Dakota; Citrus Grove Church, Wesley Chapel, Florida; Illume Church, Seattle, Washington; and Mahahual, Mexico. Interested adults, teens, and families should watch the Weekly for more information and plan to attend a Mission Trip informational meeting in January. Questions can be directed to Amy Kohlstedt, Mission Trip coordinator. “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25
