This Week

The Reformation is often summarized by the five SolasSola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Christus, Soli Deo Gloria. Each one is a bold confession, each one is a battlefield, and each one finds expression in John 8. Nevertheless, as Jesus teaches these eternal truths restored in the Reformation, the five are reduced to one: In Christ alone, the Word of God comes creating faith and granting grace. This is God glorifying Christ, and in him God alone is glorified. All who believe this truth are freed from sin, death, and the devil. They will walk in the light of life forever. Come and join us for Reformation worship at St. Andrew this week to receive and celebrate the freedom we have in the Son of God.

Highlights

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

At rest
Liz Garner went home to be with Jesus on Monday morning. Liz has been a familiar and friendly face in our St. Andrew family of faith since 1988. Now, because of Jesus’ familiar and friendly face to her, she is at his side and enjoys all that he won for her and so freely gave her. You’re invited to join the family in the high and holy privilege of a Christian funeral worship service on Sunday at 3:00 PM, preceded by an hour for visitation and followed by a luncheon to encourage one another.

Serving opportunity
The three lead funeral meal coordinators who have served so many in the past are all unavailable to serve the gathered guests for Liz’s funeral this Sunday. Do you enjoy organizing people and want to serve the family and guests at the funeral? The food will be pre-ordered from Costco and Metro Market; no need to plan the meal. Your role would be to pick up the food on Saturday or Sunday, deliver it to church and supervise the volunteers who want to help (cut vegetables, make and serve sandwiches and beverages, desserts, etc.). Please respond to [email protected] or call Amy Hutter at 608-831-8540 by Thursday at noon. Let us know if you’d like to:

  • Coordinate the meal and servers
  • Help prepare and serve the food
  • Clean up after the meal

Reformation Devotion
This week we celebrate the ministry of Martin Luther and the truth he found in the Scriptures. This St. Andrew devotion will help you grow in that precious truth.

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Paul’s epilogue—your perspective on life
After we finish our study of Acts, we’ll back up a step. We’ve been in the trenches with Paul and, to mix a metaphor, we may have missed the forest for the trees. The Spirit has taught us through his words to believers, his witness to unbelievers, the opposition he endured, and the storms he weathered. If the old man Paul could give us his bigger-picture perspective on life, what would he say? What would you say? If you’re over 65, tell us the view or lessons you’ve learned from life. Help the rest of us gain from your bigger-picture view of life. But only if you’re over 65! We recently invited people under 35 to help us understand them better; now it’s your turn! You can email if you’re not concerned about confidentiality, write on your worship folder, or use a blank Connection Card. You might start like this: What I’ve learned about life is . . .

Save the date | Children’s Christmas Program
Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 PM, the children of St. Andrew and Westside Christian School will present their Christmas program at the Middleton Performing Arts Center. Mark your calendars and join us as the kids “Get Ready for Christmas.”

Christmas decoration team
Do you have an eye for Christmas decorating? Do you enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit? The Visual Arts Christmas team could use your skills. The team will be meeting Sunday, November 6, at 11:45 AM, to design a Christmas decorating plan for the sanctuary and atrium. If you are interested in attending, please contact Visual Art team lead Sue Martalock or Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs. Decorations will go up Thanksgiving weekend.

Milestones

  • Layla Grace, daughter of Neil and Kim, was brought into the kingdom through the Spirit’s work in baptism two weeks ago. This weekend, her family of faith called St. Andrew will celebrate those gifts and pray for the Spirit who began her faith to continue confirming that faith through his Word and sacrament.
  • Our sister Liz Garner entered eternal glory on Monday, October 24. Liz had been in poor health for some time, but now enjoys the perfect peace Jesus won for her. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Worship check-in
If you worship on-site, please fill out the Connection Card attached to your worship folder. Online worshipers, please continue to check in here.

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Impact
Talk about a loaded chapter! Hebrews 4 continues with a stunning description of God’s Word and a close-up look at Jesus, our great High Priest, and how he opens the way for us to approach God with confidence. Listen to Mr. Timothy Rimpel from Illinois Lutheran High School share his insight on the second half of Hebrews 4. You can find Impact here or wherever you listen to podcasts by searching “Kjenstad Impact.”

PowerHour
If you have a little one 3 or younger, check out this enriching ministry. PowerHour is for children and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. For more details about PowerHour, click here. The next PowerHour is November 4 at 10:30, and the theme is “We’ve Got the Beat!”

Children’s ministries
Bring your child to a Sunday morning nurture ministry. This week’s Plugged into Jesus and Spark lesson is Martin Luther and the Reformation. God gave the church a gift when he raised Martin Luther to be a proponent of the truth. As Jesus says, “The truth will set you free.”

  • Musikgarten | for parents (or a caregiver) and their child up to age 3 (9:20 AM)
  • Plugged into Jesus | Pre-K3 – grade 5 (9:20 AM)
  • Spark | grades 6 – 8 (9:30 AM)

All who attend grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the love he has for them. These important ministries also lay a foundation for developing lives of faithful service to our gracious Lord. No registration is required.

FUEL
What kind of a ministry is appealing to high school students at St. Andrew? That’s what we’ll talk about Sunday. FUEL is a high-school-age St. Andrew Growth Group that meets Sundays at 9:30 AM.

Ride team needed
Do you worship at the 10:30 service? Do you drive near Parmenter in Middleton? If so, would you be willing to be part of a team to help get a senior gentleman to and from church on Sundays? With three to four individuals or families, a schedule can be worked out. If you are able to do this, please contact The Love of Christ (TLC) team leader Karen Teske-Osborne or call/text at 608-516-1315. Our TLC mission: Serving Christ by serving others.

Employment opportunity
Lakeside Lutheran High School is hiring a bus driver to take over the bus route that begins here at St. Andrew and takes the Middleton and Madison area students to and from Lakeside High School each day. If you have a heart for service or know of anyone who would be able to drive a school bus daily from Middleton, please let us know.  The pay is competitive, and they cover the costs of training and obtaining a school bus license. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Todd Grundman, Director of Operations at Lakeside Lutheran High School.

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Voters’ meeting
We are so thankful for the growth of Westside Christian School and are excited to share that we have a record 33 kindergarten students this school year! To accommodate the continued learning of these students for the 2023-24 school year, we will be calling for a second 1st grade teacher who will work closely with Mrs. Renstrom. The Board of Directors has set a special call meeting of the St. Andrew Voters’ Assembly. The meeting will be held via Zoom at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, November 9. If you would like to attend, you can join the Zoom Meeting here.
