This Week

You need a friend when . . .
Isn’t it amazing how a minor disagreement can grow into something bigger than you would have thought possible? And maybe even hurt more people than you would have thought possible? Maybe you’ve met someone who said about a friend or a spouse, “I don’t know exactly when it started. We both got so irritated with each other, and it just grew and grew. We never thought it would end like this.” But it did. When someone hurts you, our natural response is to get defensive—build a wall. But then there’s war and far-reaching consequences. There’s another way. This Thursday and Sunday, let’s learn from two early church leaders with feet of clay (like ours): you need a friend when you disagree. Read about Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15:36-41 and gather with brothers and sisters with similar feet of clay to learn from God’s Word and each other how to be a friend when you disagree.

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Thanksgiving worship
At the end of the well-known Psalm 23, King David writes, “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. “Although this is true every day of our lives, during Thanksgiving we remember the goodness of God and give him glory for the blessings of the past year. Worship with us this Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 27, at 6:30 PM (livestream available) or Thursday, November 28, at 9:00 AM (no Thursday evening worship).

Board of Directors
If you missed it this weekend, here is an update video from Board President John Kamin.

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

‘Tis the season . . .
Christmas decorations will be going up soon. There are three ways to get involved:

  1. This Sunday, November 24, stick around after 10:30 AM worship and help run across the street to get the decorations out of storage and bring them back here to church.
  2. On Sunday, December 1, stick around after 10:30 AM worship to put ornaments on the trees and “deck the halls.”
  3. The four stars that hang up in the windows in the cupula need to be restrung with lights. You can pick the stars up here and take them home, or restring them here. Stars need to be finished by Tuesday, November 26.

If you would like to get involved further, contact Visual Arts Team Lead Sue Martalock or Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs.

New livestream time coming in December
Beginning Sunday, December 1, we will be changing the livestream time from the 10:30 AM service to the 8:00 AM service. Once the livestream is complete, the service video, sermon video, and sermon audio will be posted on the homepage as it is now. A special thanks to our video techs for their flexibility in switching services.

Worship check-in
If you worship on-site, please fill out the Connection Card attached to your worship folder. Online worshipers, please continue to check in here.

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Advent by Candlelight
This fellowship event is for ladies of all ages. You are welcome to bring a friend. Refreshments will be provided. Join us Sunday, December 8, 2024, at 6:00 PM at St. Andrew. To register and see how you can help serve click here.

Grow in Grace
The Bible tells us a lot about God, but much remains unknown. That contrast is why we distinguish between The Revealed God and The Hidden God. At our next Grow in Grace, we are going to explore The Hidden God, not as an exercise in futility, but to learn to be content with The Revealed God. Join us at 9:30 in the sanctuary on December 15 for Grow in Grace. For more information on Grow in Grace, click here.

College gift idea
Do you have a college student to buy for this Christmas? Here is a suggested book that will encourage them with God’s Word.

Impact podcast
Confession, coveting, consequences, and more in part two of the true story of Achan. Returning to share his insight is Pastor Nate Wordell from Wisconsin Lutheran College. You can listen to Impact here or by searching for “Kjenstad Impact” wherever you listen to podcasts.

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Want to haul some large items away?
We are looking to dispose of some cleaning machines that no longer function. If you have a large vehicle or trailer and can make a trip to the northeast side of Madison during standard work hours or a Saturday morning, please contact Pastor Clinton.

Donate lightly used winter gear
The first box is full already! Your kindness will be most appreciated, but there’s still time. We will be collecting warm clothing until December 1. These winter items will be donated to those being released from jail who went in during the summer but leave with only what they brought in—in many cases, shorts, t-shirts, and not much money. See the list below for desired new and gently used items.

  • Winter Coats: men’s, women’s and unisex size L – 4X
  • Pants and sweatshirts: men’s and women’s size M – XXL
  • Hats, gloves, and boots in any adult size

Local pantry food drive
Last year we donated 757 pounds of food. Can we beat that this year? Bring your bagged or boxed items into the sanctuary until the end of the month. Then, we’ll take it all to WayForward Resources, a local organization that will distribute to many members of our community.

The following is WayForward’s top 10 list. See also their list of acceptable items.

  • Mac and cheese
  • Paper, plastic, and reusable grocery bags
  • Canned chicken or tuna
  • Basmati, jasmine, or white rice
  • Masa
  • Noodles (any kind)
  • Pasta (spaghetti) sauce
  • Canned beans (all varieties)
  • Canned fruit (all varieties)
  • Condiments (any kind)

Online giving transition update
Thank you to all who have transitioned your repeating CCB gift to the new Pushpay platform. As of Tuesday morning, 63% have completed the transition process. If you have not yet canceled your CCB repeating gift and rescheduled your Pushpay recurring gift, you can do so by following the email sent to you from Pushpay. All repeating CCB gifts need to be canceled and rescheduled in Pushpay by December 15, 2024. Contact Financial Administrator Ron Kerr at [email protected] with any questions. If you do not give recurring offerings online through CCB, no action is required.

Monthly Mission Partner
Our November partner is Christian Aid and Relief, specifically for hurricane relief. After Helene and Milton caused billions of dollars of damage and took many lives, this is a way we can respond and show the love of Christ, even to those far away who face crises that are largely unknown to us. Find out more about CAR’s ministry at wels.net/relief.

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Call meeting
Westside Christian School will continue to call for its open positions. We are seeking a person for the position of School Music Director for Westside and Children’s Ministry Director for St. Andrew. Please pray that the Lord fill this position so that our music program at Westside can continue to be a strong feeder for St. Andrew church music.

Mrs. Elicia Shepard has resigned her call to teach at Westside after this school year so that she can spend more time with her family. We thank her for her years of service to Westside and pray that God continues to bless her and her family.

On December 1, after the 10:30 AM service, we will be calling for the School Music and Children’s Ministry position and for a teacher to replace Mrs. Shepard. May God bless Westside with teachers willing to serve the many students and families we have at Westside.
