This Sunday

Necessary suffering
No one, given the option, would choose to suffer. No moral person likes to watch another suffer. Yet, the Bible tells us suffering is necessary on our way to the kingdom of God. Moses, Paul, Peter, Jesus, and a host of other biblical characters suffered necessarily. What about you? What good is your suffering? Find the answer in the Spirit’s truth delivered through the apostle Paul on his first missionary journey. What we find won’t make us suffer more, but we will find God’s plan for us to suffer better. Read Acts 14:21-28 and gather with your fellow saints at 7:00 PM on Thursday or at 8:00 AM or 10:30 AM on Sunday to receive and give encouragement in suffering.

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Call returned
A few weeks ago, the Holy Spirit saw fit to extend me a divine call to serve as a music teacher and staff minister at Divine Savior Church and Academy in Liberty Hill, TX. This call led me to consider the ministry needs at both St. Andrew and Divine Savior and where my gifts and abilities might best be used to serve the Lord. The last few weeks have caused much struggle, study, prayer, and self-reflection. Through that process, I have been led to continue my ministry here at St. Andrew as your Minister of Worship. I am very grateful and truly humbled by your prayers, your words of encouragement, and the thoughts you shared with me as I prayed about where God would have me serve. Please pray for the people at Divine Savior that God would fill their vacancy in his time.
Serving with you in Christ,
Naomi Laabs

Thanksgiving worship
Join us for worship this Thanksgiving as we give thanks to the Creator of all things. On-site worship will be Wednesday, November 24, at 6:30 PM and Thursday, November 25, at 9:00 AM. Live stream will be available during the Wednesday evening service at 6:30 PM.

Christmas concert save the date
On Saturday, December 18, at 4 PM, piano extraordinaire Zach Unke will be performing his Christmas concert entitled “Comfort and Joy” here at St. Andrew. Mark your calendars and join us for this fun and relaxing taste of Christmas. More information will be coming soon!

IPod needed
After 15 years of faithful service, our iPod has developed an unsolvable glitch. Many of us have relegated these devices to the same pile as CD players, so we ask—do you have a used iPod to donate to us before we purchase a replacement? Its only use is to play the worship songs on the outdoor speakers, so it doesn’t need a great capacity. If you’d like to be the answer to this low-tech need, contact Amy. Thank you.

A note from James and Michelle Baron
Greetings in Christ!

Following Michelle’s job transition to Ashley Furniture Industries in Arcadia, WI, in December of this year, we have been settling in nicely to our new home in beautiful Ettrick, WI, since May. Following an exhaustive search of the area for a local WELS church which would best meet our family’s need for spiritual guidance and fellowship, we have decided to join Bethel Lutheran Church with locations in Arcadia and Galesville. Consequently, we respectfully request to have our WELS membership transferred from St. Andrews to Bethel. We have met with Pastor Jon Cox on a number of occasions, and he instructed us to reach out to you to request this transfer.

We have enjoyed our time with St. Andrew, and in particular, watching the online services over the past 18 months. God’s blessings to you and the St. Andrew family now and in the future. May you continue to grow in God’s love and grace.

In God’s Love,
Jim and Michelle Baron

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Advent by Candlelight
You can’t tell by the weather we are having, but Christmas is approaching. To help prepare hearts, St. Andrew women’s ministry is hosting Advent by Candlelight on December 12 at 6:30 PM. More details are coming soon.

Celebrate Recovery
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16). Every week we hear from people in and outside our church family who are struggling terribly with issues: heartbreak, grief, porn, addiction, gaming, diet, insecurity, depression, anxiety, health, struggling family members, and more. We may want to hide from our issues, but we find healing from God when we confess our sins to each other. Infected wounds of the heart can only heal when they are cleaned out. At Celebrate Recovery you will find no condemnation, no one trying to fix you (except Jesus), or shame you. We are all working on our issues together. Who attends and what is said is completely confidential. Why not give it a try? Celebrate Recovery is at St. Andrew on Mondays at 6:30 PM. More information is found here. Questions about Celebrate Recovery can be sent here.

Impact—A St. Andrew podcast
Jesus was once asked, “What must I do to be saved?” That’s a good question. Or is it? This week on Impact, a St. Andrew podcast, listen to Mr. Kjenstad and Pastor Aaron Dolan, a Bible teacher at Fox Valley Lutheran High School, talk about the answer Jesus gave. Impact is new every Monday, and all past episodes are available. Click here to find Impact.

FUEL
Growing closer to God is our latest FUEL topic. Our conclusion is that the more we know about God, the more we fear, love, and trust him. And the more we fear, love, and trust God, the closer we are to him. All high school students are encouraged to join us on Sunday at 9:30 AM as we learn more about our awesome God. Speak to Mr. KJ for more information.

Musikgarten
Welcome a friend to Musikgarten, where caregivers and infants through age three join in music and rhythm activities on Sunday morning at 9:20.  Questions? Contact Karen Hong.

Plugged into Jesus
Home activity for “A Telling Truth: Pentecost”: The next time you light birthday candles, remind each other of the flames on the disciples’ heads and the power God sends in his Holy Spirit. Use this link to watch the Bible teaching video. Videos are easily shared, and you can request a kit to ship to kids you know and love.

“A Servant Speaks: Stephen” will be this week’s lesson. Bring a friend! Kids in Pre-K3 – grade 5 are welcome to PIJ every Sunday at 9:20. Questions? Contact Jane Dew.

Spark
Middle school students will learn about a man who was persecuted for his faith but rewarded by Jesus. Grades 6 – 8 meet in room 108 at 9:3o on Sundays. Contact Lance Hill with questions.

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

November Monthly Mission Partner | WELS Prison Ministry
“Remember those in prison . . .” (Hebrews 13:3). This November we are partnering once again with WELS Prison Ministry, a group that is serving more than 35,000 incarcerated inmates with the gospel. There is great hunger for the Word of God with those who are in prison. For more information about how you can help, contact WELS Prison Ministry Administrator Dave Hochmuth.

Thank you from MOM
Our St. Andrew family provided Thanksgiving food for families in the Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) resulting in 1,080 pounds of food and a donation of $1,010 in cash, checks, and gift cards. Comments from the MOM crew: “You must really have a huge church!” and “These are things we rarely get.” Thank you!

St. Andrew Giving Tree
Giving Tree gift tags are now available on the Christmas Giving Tree table in the atrium. We are giving gift cards to families this year, allowing them to purchase gifts before Christmas. The names of those giving and receiving gift cards are kept anonymous. Members can pick a tag and buy a gift card for just one person or pick up tags for a whole family. Please return your gift cards attached to their corresponding tags no later than December 5. Thank you for making a family’s Christmas even more special! “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3,4).

Mission Trips 2022
Our Mission Trip planning team has set tentative mission locations for 2022: Greater Madison, Wisconsin; Sure Foundation Church, Brandon, South Dakota; Citrus Grove Church, Wesley Chapel, Florida; Illume Church, Seattle, Washington; and Mahahual, Mexico. Interested adults, teens, and families should watch the Weekly for more information and plan to attend a Mission Trip informational meeting in January. Questions can be directed to Amy Kohlstedt, Mission Trip coordinator. “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered” (Proverbs 11:25).

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Lunch room support
We are looking for a few volunteers during the lunch period at WCS as either a lunchroom helper (11:15 AM – 12:45 PM) or as a kitchen assistant (12:00 – 2:00 PM) in November. Sign up here if you are able to support our school in this way. If you might like a very part-time, paid position as a regular kitchen assistant, please reach out to Westside’s administrative assistant, Stacy Bernd, to learn more.

Did you know . . .?
Westside Christian School teachers work with the Center for Urban Teaching (CfUT) in a variety of ways for professional development and staff training. This independent, Christian, non-profit organization is based in Milwaukee, but they’ve also worked in the Madison area with a few other schools in recent years too. This past August, two of their coaches provided professional development to all faculty and staff. They also hosted a leadership conference that our principal, preschool director, and student services director attended. Additionally, they are providing one-on-one coaching to all of our “new to WCS” classroom teachers, regardless of whether or not they are new to the teaching profession. A CfUT coach connects with teachers to learn about his/her goals, tailors feedback to what it is that the teacher is focused on with students, and comes to WCS once a month to get into all classrooms and observe how things are going in person. We believe supporting teachers in their role is one of the most important ways we can influence student achievement and are thankful for this partnership.
