This Sunday
Courage to . . .
What’s causing stress in your life right now? However you answer that question is also the answer to the question, “For what do you need courage right now?” Try it. Answer the first sentence in this paragraph. Does it also answer the second question in this paragraph? Heady stuff, to be sure, but you can handle it. Paul did. You can read about it in Acts 21:27-40. Then on Thursday or on Sunday, join your stressed-over-something brothers and sisters to encourage one another. Together, we’ll discover the same courage the Lord gave the apostle Paul. His Lord is your Lord. Let his courage be yours. And let your courage be contagious to others. When brave men and women take a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention
Call extended
St. Andrew has called Pastor Nathan Wordell to serve as our Pastor for Service and Outreach. Currently, Pastor Wordell serves Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Appleton as Associate Pastor for Family, Youth, and School. He and his wife Rachel have a one-year-old child, Soren. Please pray for them as they determine where they will serve Jesus’ church. Welcome the new Board of Directors
This Sunday at 10:30 AM, St. Andrew will install the new members of the Board of Directors. These men will be serving the St. Andrew family throughout the next two years in their new roles. Meet your current Board of Directors:
President Clayton Grow
Clayton and his wife, Stephanie, have been married for almost 21 years and have been members at St. Andrew for 10 years. Clayton enjoys playing for the St. Andrew Music team alongside his two children, Elijah and Clara, both students at Lakeside Lutheran High School. Clayton is Director of Operations at Time of Grace Ministry, and he is excited to serve as president of the Board during such an exciting time at St. Andrew. “St. Andrew, I believe, is doing many of the right things to promote to the people of the Madison area how important and impactful God’s Word is. Our society seems to be more fractured than ever, but if we can show our community that Christianity is based on the infinite love Jesus has shown us, our communities will truly be better places to live. I feel that my work experience has given me the skills to re-energize St. Andrew for our long-term goals while ensuring that the shorter-term work is helping to achieve those goals.” When Clayton is not playing his guitar (bass and electric), you can find him coaching wrestling at Lakeside Lutheran High School, hiking, or enjoying time with his family.

Ready to welcome their third child any day now, Tom and Elicia will celebrate 10 years of marriage next month. Tom is a trainer for Epic who enjoys biking, hiking, fishing, and camping, and he relishes spending time with his young children, Tori and Cohen. As a member of St. Andrew for 12 years, Tom welcomes this opportunity to serve the St. Andrew congregation while learning and growing alongside the other Board members and ministry team leaders.

Secretary Mitch Hutter
Mitch and his wife, Amy, look forward to celebrating 20 years of marriage this fall with their daughter, Alayna, a third grade student at Westside Christian School. Mitch is a physical therapist and coach of Alayna’s softball team. Alongside his family, Mitch loves to run and bike, watch MLB baseball and Badgers basketball, and grill and smoke (pizza and ribs are his specialties). “St. Andrew has given me and my family so much over the past 16 years. I humbly consider it an honor and privilege to serve the Lord and the St. Andrew family as secretary. A strong church and school here have a tremendous impact beyond our walls and allow us to serve the world. With the help of God, I look forward to providing guidance for our church in the direction God has for us.”

Director of Properties, Steve Veers
Steve’s flight on the Board of Directors begins after his recent retirement from serving the United States Air Force for 32 years. When grounded, Steve enjoys the company of his wife of 28 years, Dana; daughter, Jordan (engaged to Weston Swarztrauber); and sons Isac and Seth. Steve likes to stay active by exercising, skiing (both water and snow), and accomplishing projects. Steve has been a part of the St. Andrew family for 15 years and is delighted to serve as director of properties. “I am looking forward to working with my brothers and sisters in Christ to support the ministry. I am at the perfect time in my life to be able to do so on a larger scale.”

Financial Administrator (Treasurer) Ron Kerr
Ron is a financial, operational, and risk management consultant who currently serves as the acting interim financial administrator for St. Andrew. He and wife Piri have been married for 36 years and have two children (Andy married to Anna and Sarah engaged to Dan Arndt) and three grandchildren (Johnny, Lincoln, and Sullivan). For fun Ron likes to run, entertain, and kayak, but most of all he appreciates the time he spends with Piri and their grandchildren. Ron is an ex officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors and can often be seen in the St. Andrew kitchen cooking and serving his St. Andrew family of 14 years. |

Nurture
Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others
Pre-Marriage Workshop
You put time into planning for the dress, the band, the menu, the seating, the invitations, etc. And as good as it all is, it will all be gone a couple hours after you say your vows. Your marriage, though, remains. Plenty of wedding planning experts and websites offer to help you plan your wedding. Let us help you plan for a marriage that honors God and a lifetime of bringing joy to your spouse. St. Andrew offers two Pre-Marriage Workshops each year to our community. The next one is on Saturday, July 23. If you’re engaged, you can register now. Registration closes on Sunday, July 17. This isn’t just for people of St. Andrew. Forward this invitation and the link to engaged couples you know who want to gain valuable skills for a Christian marriage. Science Camp
St. Andrew Science Camp is July 18 – 21 from 8:30 – 11:30 AM. Our theme is “The Wonders of Water.” St. Andrew Science Camp is for 4K – grade 6. Kids in grades 7 – 8 can serve as Leaders-in-Training. If you need registration information, contact Staff Minister for Nurture Mark Kjenstad.
Science Camp serving opportunities
The service people are trickling in. Thank you! It’s time to flood the sign-ups with helpers, from counselors and games, to snacks and crafts, to experiments and puppets . . . When did puppets leak into the plan? Kids from grades 5 – 8 can sign up to be puppeteers! Email Patty Coffren today and make a splash with puppets.
Stay dry and sign up under the umbrella in the atrium to serve at Science Camp! Questions about serving? Contact Jane Dew.

Impact
Does God have a dream for his church? It might be what we see right after Pentecost in Acts 2. Listen to Pastor Kent Reeder, from Illume Church in Seattle, explain what was terrific about the early church. You can find Impact here or wherever you listen to podcasts by searching “Kjenstad Impact.”

Service & Outreach
Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others
July Monthly Mission Partner
This month we support with our offerings and prayers the Hmong Outreach in Vietnam. In 2011 the Hmong Fellowship Church invited the WELS into Vietnam to help train their church leaders in the teachings of the Bible. Since that time, the Christian Church in Vietnam has grown by God’s grace. The communist government noticed the positive changes and in 2018 invited the WELS to build a theological education center in the capital of Hanoi. We thank God for opening doors to spread the gospel in Vietnam. To learn more about this mission, visit the WELS website.

Westside Christian School
A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word
Westside Christian School Council
Beginning this summer, WCS will have a new School Council to serve as the governing body of Westside Christian School. They will be accountable to the Board of Directors (BoD), but the BoD will delegate to it the authority for oversight of Westside Christian School and the ability to set school-related policies. The following St. Andrew members have agreed to serve: Dan Kremer (chairman), Mark Westphal (secretary), Andy Bindl (treasurer), Ben Carlson, and Casey Weiss.
The advisory members of the School Council will include the principal, Pastor for Service and Outreach (when filled), and one faculty member. Jack Murphy, Westside’s Athletic Director, has been voted by the staff to serve as the faculty representative for the 2022-23 school year. We are planning the first meeting for July.
Opportunities for Athletics
Do you have a passion for kids and fitness? For this upcoming fall, we still have a number of volunteer positions that need to be filled. Westside Christian athletics are currently in need of:
- One JV volleyball head coach (4th – 6th grade)
- One JV volleyball assistant coach (4th – 6th grade)
- One varsity volleyball head coach (7th – 8th grade)
- One cross country head coach (4th – 8th grade)
- One cross country communication coordinator (4th – 8th grade)
- One concessions leader/team
Thank you for considering these volunteer positions. Your time commitment helps athletics throughout the year run smoothly! Please email Jack Murphy if you have any questions or interest in these positions. |
