This Sunday

Praise the Lord
It’s more than a Pinterest board, the full name of a defunct televangelist group (PTL), or a spontaneous outburst of a believer’s gratitude. In fact, the setting of those words in Psalm 146 have more to do with justice and care for the poor or sick. Find the interesting juxtaposition in Psalm 146, but don’t be too surprised. Our Lord specializes in the unexpected. Read through Psalm 146 this week and then gather with God’s people to remember why we praise him on Thursday at 7:00 PM or on Sunday at 8:00 AM or 10:30 AM.

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Parking lot update
When the parking lot top layer was ground off last week, the remaining asphalt base layer below was discovered to be in an “unfavorable” condition. The current lot condition was evaluated by Tri-County Paving and the third-party inspection agency hired by Kraemer Brothers (CGC). The condition of the lot is described in the following conditions:

  • The north approximately 1/3 of the parking lot was deemed “unpaveable in its current condition.” This means that the remaining asphalt and gravel base below will not support the weight of the paving machine and the dump trucks hauling asphalt. Most of this area is blown out with unsuitable gravel base under it. This area is in very rough shape with portions undriveable.
  • The south approximately 1/3 of the parking lot was in slightly better condition but is in “poor condition” with limited areas of base layer asphalt blown out / missing and multiple soft spots.
  • The middle approximately 1/3 and the entry drive was in an “acceptable” condition with a minimal number of areas blown out or soft.

Tri-County would not pave or warrant the job based on the existing condition, therefore requiring us to consider some level of corrective action.

Sounds expensive? You’re right. Our Ministry Expansion Committee worked with Kraemer Brothers to hold an allowance in the amount of $30k to address areas that would need corrective action. The other bit of good news is that we have an additional $10K in unused allowance that we can also apply to this issue. As you can expect, the order of magnitude exceeds the $40K. The following is the recommendation:

  • Pulverize the remaining 1 ½” of asphalt and repave with (2) 2” lifts for the perimeter drive aisles and (1) 2” lift and (1) 1 ½” lift below the parking spaces and in the center drive aisle—Add $65,000
  • The paving company and CGC noted that the rock islands (where we once had trees) are the likely cause of the water infiltration under the pavement and causing premature aging with freeze / thaw each winter. Dig-out / pave islands—Add $13,750
  • Assuming a worst-case scenario that the first two areas mentioned (44,000 square feet) needs to be undercut (dug out and replace with 12” of compacted gravel—1,650 cubic feet)—Add $79,200
  • Construction fee on the estimated work above—Add $5,898

Total change $163,848 – $40,000 = $123,848 additional. The Board of Directors has approved the change and work will proceed.

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Growth Groups
Spending time with God’s Word and God’s people during the week—that is what a St. Andrew Growth Group is about. And what follows are wonderful blessings from our gracious Lord. Fall Growth Groups will begin in early September. Are you wanting to host a group in your home? Contact our Staff Minister for Nurture, Mark Kjenstad, for more information about this wonderful opportunity to serve God’s people at St. Andrew.

FUEL
We had a good time on the lake in July, and we are planning our August adventure. Details are on the way. FUEL is for all high school students at St. Andrew. How about you join us next time!

Impact
Does God really love me? This is a common question with a definite “yes” answer. Psalm 103 assures you of God’s love. Listen to Dr. John Brug share deep insight on this dearly loved Psalm. Listen to Impact here, on Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you find podcasts. Search “Kjenstad Impact.”

Science Carnival

Children must attend with their parents or another adult. You can come anytime between 9 AM – 3 PM and stay as long as you like. Tell your friends and family about the St. Andrew Science Carnival. It will blow you away!

Moms’ Group

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Mission Trip
Sam Dettman and Isac Veers have returned from their work at Illume Church in Seattle. From the looks of it, much of their work involved sledgehammers and sawzalls. We are grateful for their work (during the hottest days on record for Seattle) and for their safe return. Sam and Isac will report on the work being done there in our worship services this weekend.

Congregational conversations on August 5 & 8
We have a hole in the leadership of our ministry, specifically the area of our ministry we call Service & Outreach. In the past we have been blessed by the leadership of a Pastor for Service and Outreach, but how will we help God’s people serve and reach out to others in the future? That is the question we’re asking each other and the Lord of the Church. If you’d like to be part of the process, join us for a listening session after our worship service on Thursday, August 5, or after either worship service on Sunday, August 8. Anticipate the session will last about a half-hour.
