This Week

From where?
Are you impressed by people born in impressive places? I recently ate at a restaurant named for a man born while his parents were climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, inspiring his parents to carry him to the top. Or was it all a marketing gimmick? Still, no one would name a restaurant after someone born in Possum Grape, Arkansas or Burnt Corn, Alabama. You might not expect much from towns like those. That’s the way people felt about Jesus’ childhood home of Nazareth. But Jesus turned the world upside down. Smart sophisticated people (like you) don’t have a lock on the truth; Jesus does. And he unlocks it for all; but maybe not the way you expect. Gather with the brothers and sisters we love, serve and care for on Thursday at 7 PM or on Sunday at 8 or 10:30 AM to marvel at who Jesus is, what he came to do and his message and ministry.

Highlights

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Call meeting
A call meeting for Westside Christian School is scheduled for 6 PM, Thursday, January 16, in room 110. We will be calling for a 3rd grade teacher (replacing Mrs. Shepard) and a School Music Program Director/Children’s Ministry Director position. We invite all to attend. If you are unable to attend, please continue to keep Westside Christian School and its staff in your prayers.

A Place of Peace information meeting
We are at a critical stage in our mission in ministry. Frankly, we are compromised because of our facility. We’ve seen it coming for over a year and have been working diligently toward a solution. Just as frankly, those solutions have been elusive. Although we don’t have all the information you wish we had, it is time to give everyone a more precise update on where we are. Join us for pictures and numbers on Sunday at 9:30 AM in the sanctuary. Learn more about what God might do through us and how we might pray and work toward it.

Growth Groups
Sign up today for a spring Growth Group! Here’s what you will get: meaningful discussion, godly encouragement, a safe place for your questions, and Christian friendship. Go here to sign up and learn more about St. Andrew Growth Groups.

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Adult Choir
Blend your voice with others to sing God’s praise this new year. We’ll rehearse at 7 PM on Wednesdays January 22, 29, and February 5 in the Soul Café to sing for worship on Sunday, February 9. High-school-age and older are welcome to attend. Questions? Email Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs.

Milestones
Dr. Richard Li, husband of Dr. Tammy Woller-Li, died for unknown medical reasons at their home in Naperville, Illinois, on Sunday, January 12. His Christian funeral service will take place as part of the ministry of St. Andrew, but at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Aurora, Illinois, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 18. Invite the Spirit to bless Tammy and the children, Nyah, Jaden, and Makaelynn with an extra measure of confidence in Jesus’ gracious promises of a resurrection and reunion for all his believers. View Richard’s obituary here.

Dorothy Powers died at Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg on October 10, 2024, at the age of 94 years. Her Christian funeral will take place at St. Andrew at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 19. Ask the Lord to bless her children Dale and Julie and Darren and Therese with comfort in the new life she now enjoys and that will never end. 94 years is a long time, but a drop in the bucket of the eternity she now enjoys. View Dorothy’s obituary here.

Worship check-in
If you worship on-site, please fill out the Connection Card attached to your worship folder. Online worshipers, please continue to check in here.

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Help us help you serve
The One Body, Many Members survey is a tool for you to let us know areas in which you might like to serve. Some are recurring; others are situational. The responses have been used successfully many times, allowing lots of members to find new or different ways to serve. But the greater the response, the greater the ministry. So, if you still have not, please take the survey and help us help you serve.

Growth Group Service Projects
Another great benefit of Growth Groups is an opportunity to serve with other people. We have some ideas for your group, or you can come up with your own. We hope you will join a spring Growth Group, and we pray your service through it will bring a blessing to you and others.

Service opportunity | children’s ministries
Here’s a way to serve with immediate opportunities. If you are passionate about children and their Christian instruction, consider joining the Plugged into Jesus team. You serve about once a month on Sundays by teaching children Bible accounts and leading them in planned activities. Contact Yvonne Onsager if interested.

Monthly Mission Partner
Our January partner is a sister church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Illumine is a mission church and was a host to one of our teen mission teams last summer. We hope to send another team this summer to assist with their science camp in July. Get more acquainted with Illumine at illuminechurch.com.

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Welcome back to Westside
This past week, Westside Christian School welcomed back a former student into the second grade classroom. Kylie Roekle graduated from Westside Christian School, went through Lakeside Lutheran High School, and is now a freshman at Martin Luther College. As part of her training to be a teacher, she is required to complete some volunteer hours. What a blessing that she chose her former school as a place she wanted to volunteer!

It has not been that long since Kylie graduated from WCS, but she definitely noticed the changes that have occurred here. The middle school addition was probably the biggest change, not to mention the overall growth in school population.

Please keep Kylie in your prayers as she continues her training to be a teacher. Thank you, Kylie, for your willingness to spend some time with our students!
