This Week

Breaking tradition
What is your favorite tradition for winter? For summer? For Christmas or Independence Day? For your or a loved one’s birthday? Our lives are full of traditions, and so is the Bible. This weekend, Matthew 15 gives us some guidance on the value we place on traditions and when it might be appropriate to break them. Join us to hear Jesus’ words and worship him together. Services are Thursday night at 7 and Sunday morning at 8 and 10:30.

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Pastor for Outreach call extended
Last week St. Andrew called Pastor John Borgwardt to serve as our Pastor for Outreach. He currently serves at Living Word Lutheran Church in Waukesha. Pray for him and his ministry as he compares two possible paths before him. Pastor Borgwardt’s acknowledgement letter is below.

Westside Christian School call updates
We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Ashley Renstrom has returned her call to teach in Texas. She thanks you for the prayers and comments!

Our next call meeting for a teacher for grade 5 is this Thursday at 6:00 PM in Room 110 (same room we are usually in).

A Place of Peace

Updates related to the ministry expansion and building project

Construction update
Drywalling continues inside the new building—by the end of this week, most walls of the new sanctuary will be completed (stay tuned next week for pictures). Outside the building, the roofing is being completed this week, and the enclosure around the dumpsters in the north parking lot is being built as well. The crane that has been here for the last six months was officially taken away on Friday. It has been fun for everyone to watch it operate as the building went up.

A Place of Peace giving
Giving can be set up like other offerings. Go to “Give” at the website, and you can set up a one-time or recurring gift. Choose “A Place of Peace” as the “Fund.” If using a check, please put “A Place of Peace” in the memo line. If using St. Andrew offering envelopes, use the designation “Ministry Expansion.”

Even if you didn’t make a formal pledge, you can still give. Every bit helps, as St. Andrew will still carry some debt, and the less debt, the more ministry.

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Wednesday Lent devotions | Father, Forgive
This Lent, in a series called “Father, Forgive,” we will meet six people who needed forgiveness from the cross as we follow Jesus to it. By considering Christ’s prayers for their behavior, we gain insights into our own temptations and shortcomings and give thanks for the Father’s forgiveness. Gather with brothers and sisters on the six Wednesdays of Lent beginning February 18 at 5:00 or 6:30 PM. Stay for dinner provided by one of our St. Andrew Best Chefs from 5:30 – 6:15 PM. Livestream will be available at 5:00 PM.

  • February 18: Forgive our doubt | Best Chef Laura Westphal will serve sloppy joes and baked potato bar (GF available)
  • February 25: Forgive our defiance | Best Chefs Jesus Avila and Asencion Montenegro will serve chicken enchiladas (GF available)
  • March 4: Forgive our Resentfulness | Best Chefs Dan and Sarah Arndt will serve macaroni and cheese and cheesy grits (GF available)
  • March 11: Forgive our dissent | Best Chef Lauren Figi will serve a variety of soups (GF available)
  • March 18: Forgive our doubt |Best Chef Jane Dew will serve breakfast sandwiches (GF available)
  • March 25: Forgive our misplacement | Best Chefs Dwayne and Stacy Kratt will serve white chicken chili (GF)

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Children’s Ministry Day
Save the date for summer fun at St. Andrew Children’s Ministry Day. We are having a one-day event for children that will include science experiments, art, music, games, and a cookout with the whole family. Of course, it all will center around Jesus. The date is July 8. The location is Garner Park in Madison. The age range is entering kindergarten – grade 6. Last year 40 children attended CMD, and we served 100+ for the cookout. Due to construction, St. Andrew will not be having science camp this summer. God-willing, our traditional week-long on-site science camp will return in 2027.

Impact
You have been set free by the death and resurrection of Jesus. Colossians 2 teaches that truth and more. Listen to Pastor David Maertz, Great Plains Lutheran High School president. Pull precious gospel truths from this wonderful chapter. You can listen to Impact here or by searching for “Kjenstad Impact” wherever you listen to podcasts.

PowerHour
PowerHour returns on Friday, February 6, with “Habitats of the World.” PowerHour is for parents and their young children. It begins at 10:15 in the St. Andrew gym. For more information on PowerHour, click here.

Sunday children’s ministries
Musikgarten, Plugged into Jesus, Spark, and FUEL have room for your children. Note the sign in the atrium with locations and times. “Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

LWMS Convention coming to Madison
The 63rd Annual Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society Convention is June 25 – 28 in Madison at Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. It features workshops, devotions, fellowship, and much more. There will also be many opportunities to serve both before and during; if you are interested in serving, please contact Amanda Taticek. Visit 63.lwms.org for more information about the convention.

Service opportunity | Assist with Wednesday Lent meals
Lent worship services begin in two weeks. These are additional opportunities to gather and focus on our Savior and to share a meal. If you would like to serve by assisting the chefs with prep, setup, service, and cleanup, sign up here. If your whole Growth Group is interested, contact Pastor Clinton.

Save the date for teen mission trip
Mission trips provide a perfect opportunity to grow in faith, encourage others, and share in the love of Jesus through various acts of service. This year we will be sending a group back to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to help lead a smaller church’s science camp. The trip dates are June 20/21 – 26. If you are or have an interested teen or are interested in leading the trip, please contact Pastor Clinton.

A letter from WayForward Resources
Below is an excerpt from a letter of gratitude received from a recent October Monthly Mission Partner.

St. Andrew Lutheran Church,

Because of your generous donation of $4254.35, more people will be able to find a path to stability. With your support, WayForward Resources served nearly 15,000 people last year— the most in our over 40-year history and more than twice as many as two years ago.

Together, we can give families the chance to focus on making dinner and doing homework at the kitchen table rather than having to choose between paying rent and buying groceries to avoid eviction.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Ellen Carlson, Executive Director
Peggy Halloran, Donor Relations Officer

Monthly Mission Partner
Our February partner is our church body’s mission efforts to the Hmong population in Vietnam. In 2025, the Hmong Evangelical Lutheran Church baptized over 10,000 individuals, and they continue to spread the gospel and grow. View a photo album of the Holy Spirit’s work in Vietnam.

Warrior for a Day
Last week, our 7th grade students had the opportunity to attend “Warrior for a Day” at Lakeside Lutheran High School. The purpose of this great day is for 7th grade students from the Lakeside federation to come together and spend the day learning what life is like at LLHS. The WCS students had to get to the bus in our parking lot by 6:45 AM just like they would have to if they were a Lakeside student. They spent about an hour on the bus as we stopped to pick up additional students. They arrived at LLHS at 8:00 AM ready to start their experience.

The teachers at Lakeside led students through a typical day. The students enjoyed lunch and then headed to a roller skating rink in Watertown to burn off some energy. The Westside students enjoyed their day and the opportunity to be a Warrior for a Day!

Attending LLHS is a true commitment for many Westside families. The travel distance alone can be a great challenge. However, continuing to hear the gospel message daily at Lakeside just like they heard during their years at Westside proves to be a great blessing for many.
