This Week

Follow me
If you like what you see in some social media apps, you’re invited to “click, like, and subscribe.” Other apps are more direct and simply say, “If you like what you see, follow me.” They stole that from Jesus! Early in his ministry, Jesus invited four people to “follow me.” They did, but why? What did they see in Jesus that made them “click, like, and subscribe”? What do you see in him that makes you do the same, and what does it look like? Find the answers in Matthew 4:18-22. Then gather with other followers of Jesus to show that you “subscribe” and to encourage others to hear Jesus’ invitation: “Follow me.” Jesus sends out that invitation to you at St. Andrew this Thursday at 7:00 PM and on Sunday at 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM.

Highlights

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

A Place of Peace Voters’ meeting | Sunday, February 23, 11:45 AM
St. Andrew members are invited to get the latest information about plans for our much-needed worship and education space. The agenda is to consider and approve a building and funding plan for a new sanctuary that will seat 40% more people than our current interim worship space and four more classrooms that will allow our ministry of Westside Christian School to serve 30% more students. The plans both for the building and the funding will be presented, and then the Voters will be asked to lead us by authorizing the plan. Our gratitude goes to the many brothers and sisters who have worked so tirelessly and sacrificially in the past year to develop these plans. Here’s the version of “A Place of Peace” presented at the information session a few weeks ago. On Sunday, you’ll receive an updated version with slight changes that bring the cost in line with our budget.

Funeral
St. Andrew will bring the gospel to those who mourn the loss of Andrew Holdorf, son of Jennifer and Terry Utter. We’ll host a time for visitation on Saturday, February 22, at noon, lead a Christian funeral service for Andrew at 2:00 PM, and offer the hospitality of a light meal for the attendees after the funeral. We thank the many volunteers who will serve Andrew’s family and friends. Your work is a demonstration of what it looks like, in one way, to answer Jesus’ invitation: “Follow me.

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Lent Wednesdays begin March 5 | The Crucial Hours
Do you remember when the space shuttle Challenger exploded? When the World Trade Center towers were attacked? Neither those nor Normandy, Waterloo, nor Gettysburg are history’s most crucial hours. That distinction belongs to what took place almost 2,000 years ago in a small vassal state of the mighty Roman empire without any armed forces involved. When Jesus of Nazareth paid his last visit to Jerusalem, he determined the destiny of mankind. Never in all history were the stakes so high or the results so far-reaching.

Can those Jesus redeemed by his blood ever lose interest in the events of Holy Week? Is there anything a child of God can profit from more than examining the sacred record of the crucial hours when the Son of God redeemed us? Gather with the saints of St. Andrew this Lenten season to understand and appreciate the most crucial hours and gain a deeper knowledge and a bolder confession of the name of our Savior. Worship at 5:00 or 6:30 PM and join us for dinner from 5:30 – 6:15 PM. Livestream available at 5 PM.

  • March 5—The Hour of Remembrance
  • March 12—The Hour of Sifting
  • March 19—The Hour of Binding
  • March 26—The Hour of Trial
  • April 2—The Hour of Grieving
  • April 9—The Hour of Punishment

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Meditations
What makes a good daily devotional? Faithful to the Word. Relevant to my life. Convicts me of sin. Comforts me with the good news of Jesus. Meditations checks all of these boxes. Grab a copy from the atrium and feed daily on the bread of life.

Impact podcast
The Ten Commandments are not going to save you. Jesus did that. However, that does not make them unimportant. Pastor Kyle Bitter, a teacher of God’s Word at Luther Preparatory School, is here to help us learn more about these universal and timeless commands. Listen to Impact here or by searching for “Kjenstad Impact” wherever you listen to podcasts.

PowerHour
February brings some change to PowerHour dates. Instead of the 1st and 3rd Fridays, it will be on the 2nd and 4th Fridays. That makes the next PowerHour February 28 with a “Vacation Time” theme. Go here to learn more about this ministry for children.

Sunday Children’s Ministries
Learning the precious truths of God’s Word is important at all stages of life. Perhaps it’s most important at the early stages. That’s when the foundation is laid for a lifetime of growth in the Word and service to our King. St. Andrew offers these ministries on Sunday mornings:

Musikgarten
up to age 3 | 9:20 | room 104

Plugged into Jesus
4K – kindergarten | 9:20 | room 102
grades 1 – 5 | 9:20 | gym

Spark
grades 6 – 8 | 9:30 | room 110

LifeBoat
This fun ministry for grades 7 – 10 gathers again on Sunday, March 2, from 5 – 7 PM at St. Andrew. You are welcome to bring a friend. It’s a simple agenda: hang out, enjoy some snacks, and open up the Bible for a bit. Never been? Give it a try!

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Funeral for Andrew Holdorf
Andrew, son of Jennifer Utter, passed away unexpectedly earlier this month. His funeral will be at 2:00 at St. Andrew on Saturday, February 22. We pray that his family find comfort in the forgiveness of sins and in the resurrection of Jesus to conquer death.

If you would like to serve his family and friends by helping with the funeral meal, contact Pastor Clinton.

Service opportunity | Assist with Wednesday Lent meals
Lent worship services begin March 5 and continue the next five weeks. These are additional opportunities to gather and focus on our Savior and to share a meal. If you or your Growth Group would like to serve by assisting the chefs with prep, setup, service, and cleanup, sign up here. If you would like to consider being one of our meal chefs, contact Pastor Clinton.

Sharps disposal
The restroom outside the sanctuary now has a sharps disposal container. Thanks to Erin Arndt for installing this over the weekend.

Service roles to be filled
Do you get the impression that there’s no place for you to serve? There is. Below are a few of the teams that could get you involved in service right away. See Pastor Clinton to serve.

  • Audio—mostly turning mics on and off and up and down. It may seem intimidating, but it just takes a little bit of training.
  • Sunday 10:30 AM slides—controlling what is on the screens. It’s mostly about paying attention and pressing buttons.
  • Thursday ushering—helping worshipers get what they need and making sure service runs smoothly

Monthly Mission Partner
In February we pray for and support the families of Abundant Life Christian School, a community that experienced a tragedy in December. The kindness God’s people show to our neighbor is in response to the kindness God has shown us in Christ, who lived and died even for his enemies. February MMP offerings will be used to send a gift to each individual family as an outpouring of Christian love.

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Call updates
St. Andrew called Miss Amy Biedenbender for grade 3. Miss Biedenbender is currently teaching grades 3 & 4 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Tammy Mielke has been called to teach in the middle school at East Fork Lutheran School in Whiteriver, Arizona. Take time to speak with Tammy regarding her call to East Fork and her current call to Westside.

Please keep both Amy and Tammy in your prayers as they consider where best to serve. The teacher calling season continues until the middle of April. Until then, updates will continue.
