This Sunday
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his powerful “We Shall Overcome” speech on March 16, 1966. It took two and half minutes ( youtube.com/watch?v=VeHNbGE3tJw). The refrain, “we shall overcome,” didn’t sugar-coat the suffering that might be necessary for some, but expressed the hope that finally God’s grace will lift us out of suffering and into glory. First suffering, then glory. It’s been a refrain of God’s children since the fall into sin. Is it your song? If not, praise God. Don’t seek suffering. If it is, praise God. Children of God have this confidence: we shall overcome. We’ve reached the point in our study of the Book of Acts where the Apostle Paul is a prisoner. He’ll never be free again. But in two different imprisonments for the last years of his life, he proclaims freedom from sin, death, and suffering through Christ. Read Acts 23 and join your brothers and sisters this Thursday or Sunday to sing the refrain, because of Christ, we shall overcome.

Nurture
Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others
Grow in Grace
That rainbow you see after a rain shower is a reason to rejoice in the faithfulness of God. We learn what the rainbow means to Christians in the aftermath of The Flood. Let’s Talk About the Rainbow is our new series for Grow in Grace. This 4-week whole church Bible study leads up to the promise God gave after The Flood. Let’s Talk About The Rainbow continues August 21 at 9:30 AM in the sanctuary.
Week 1 | The reason for The Flood
Week 2 | The ark and its contents
Week 3 | The Flood (with special guest Mr. Mark Bergemann, President of Lutheran Science Institute)
Week 4 | God’s promise to never again use water to destroy the earth
College addresses
St. Andrew loves to stay connected with our college students. If you are a college student or a mom/dad to one, please send this year’s address to St. Andrew Staff Minister for Nurture Mark Kjenstad or put it on your Connection Card.
Impact
Although David was a man after the Lord’s own heart and although he gives us pages of beautiful Scripture to ponder and gain strength from, like us, he was a great sinner. At the end of 2nd Samuel, we read about the “census sin”. Maybe you don’t know this true story. Listen to Tim Rimpel, Bible teacher at Illinois Lutheran High School, tell it and explain it. You can find Impact here or wherever you listen to podcasts by searching “Kjenstad Impact.”
PowerHour
A new year of PowerHour begins September 2! If you have a little one 3 or under, check out this enriching ministry. PowerHour is for children and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. Each week, all of the activity funnels from a fun theme such as “Out of this World,” “Let’s Go Camping,” or “Fall Farmers’ Market.” You’ll have a chance to meet new friends, and your child will learn and have a lots of fun! For a few more details about PowerHour, click here.

Service & Outreach
Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others
Call update
Pastor Clinton Kreuziger and Michelle continue to deliberate the call to serve as our Pastor for Service and Outreach. The staff here has enjoyed robust conversations with Pastor K and you are invited to contact him, too, if you wish.
Service and outreach
We have engaged Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary senior Joel Hopper to serve as our “senior vicar.” Vicar Hopper spent the past year at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel as a vicar, the third year of a four-year seminary program. He is now back on campus at the seminary in Mequon but will travel to Middleton on Sundays to be our regular guest preacher, worship assistant, Growth Group leader and, potentially, assist us with outreach, depending somewhat on the academic demands of his senior year. He will begin his service at St. Andrew in September and conclude next April or May. This arrangement allows us to have a consistent voice as a guest preacher, spend less time securing guest preachers, drop fewer balls in our outreach ministry, and provide financial help to a seminary student. We do not intend to continue engaging a senior vicar after next spring.
Prayer Requests
Every week the Connection Cards, the Online Worship Check-in, and the Prayer Request form in Church Community Builder (CCB) has space for prayer requests. Are you aware that over 12 people take those requests to our Heavenly Father’s throne on your behalf? Your brothers and sisters in Christ pray for our church, our leaders, and our members in response to those requests. Continue to make your requests and provide updates on people who need continual prayers or who have received answers to their prayers. Encourage your friends and children to write down their requests. If you are interested in joining the prayer team, contact Pastor Hunter who will put you in touch with the team leader.
Fill the barrel
Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) offers a variety of services to assist people in Middleton and Dane County. MOM was forced to limit some of their services during COVID, but beginning this month they are expanding food pantry hours and visits along with accepting clothing donations. Every fall, MOM collects school supplies which are distributed to kids before school starts. Here is how you can help:
1. Check the MOM website to see what food donations are needed at this time. Also consider donating gently used clothing to the free clothing center.
2. Check the MOM back-to-school webpage to see what school supplies are needed.
3. Purchase any of the needed items and deposit them in the big barrel in the church/school entryway.
4. The items will be delivered to MOM by St. Andrew volunteers.
These items are ALWAYS needed: teen clothing, laundry detergent, personal care items.
Thank you for your support of this community partner. Questions can be directed to Nancy Ninman or 608-250-9576.
Childcare needed
A St. Andrew family is in need of short-term in-home childcare for an infant this January – April. If you would like more information, contact Email info@st-andrew-online.org.
August Monthly Mission Partner
Learning is what college is for. In addition to subjects studied, students also learn about other cultures, beliefs, and worldviews. All of that is good, unless it becomes a god and replaces the truth of the true God. Students in college need our prayers and our ministry. Students at UW-Madison have the benefit of Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel and Student Center. It’s a place to study, meet friends, and look at options through the lens of Christian faith. For decades, St. Andrew has partnered with the Chapel in worship, ministries, and with our prayers and financial support. Your offerings to our Monthly Mission Partner will support the ministry of the Chapel. You can check out what they’re doing at wlchapel.org. Better yet, the next time you’re on State Street, turn north at the Chocolate Shoppe, see the Chapel, and stop in for a visit.

Westside Christian School
A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word
2022 – 2023 School Year
The faculty and staff at Westside Christian School are busy preparing for the new year and can’t wait to welcome our students and parents back to the building. Monday, August 22, will be Preschool Orientation (4 – 5 PM) and K – 8 Kick-off Night (5 – 7 PM). We are excited to announce that we will also have food carts outside for fellowship and to make it a fun, community event that evening. Melted, Bob’s BBQ Emporium, and Kona Ice will be serving delicious meals and shaved ice treats (weather permitting).
WCS begins another school year on Wednesday, August 24. The 2022 – 2023 school theme is “Making Disciples for Life.” We will focus on the text from Matthew 28:19–20, when Jesus’ disciples were first commissioned to “make disciples.” Through God’s Word, students will learn what it means to be a disciple and how God’s command to “make disciples” can be applied in their everyday life – at school, at home, and in the community. |
