This Week
A kind of Real that only comes through suffering
“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
―Margery Williams Bianco, The Velveteen Rabbit
That’s more than just a poignant and sweet children’s story. It’s what God is doing in you when you suffer. This week’s poetical book is Job. Gather with fellow sufferers on Thursday or Sunday and let the Spirit use Job’s words to give you resources for when you are suffering.

Worship
Resources and opportunities for you to worship
A/V serving opportunities
Don’t be intimidated by all the electronic equipment—the A/V booth provides many opportunities to not only serve but to learn new skills:
- Livestream Video techs make live streaming possible each week by adjusting cameras and online microphones.
- Audio techs adjust the microphone levels in the sanctuary and mix the music for our livestream.
- Slide techs make it possible to worship from the screens as they advance the slides throughout worship.
Interested in learning more or shadowing in one of these areas? Contact Minister of Worship Naomi Laabs or Pastor Clinton.
Milestones
Aidan Daniel Miller was born to Tim and Kari Miller on Saturday, August 5. Although his delivery proved a bit “complicated,” he and mom are healthy and home. God-willing, the Spirit will welcome Aidan into the family of God through his work in Holy Baptism this Sunday.
Aaron Brandt, son of Leroy and Glennda Brandt, died unexpectedly at his home in Washington State last weekend. Aaron was a good son and a gifted engineer. He had been living and working in the Pacific Northwest for the past 25 years, most recently in a home he had built by himself. Leroy and Glennda are planning an event for friends and family to come together to support each other.
Tikvah Saidler and Mathew Madden will be married this Saturday afternoon. They’ve built their worship service around the truth about love as the Spirit gives it to us in 1 Corinthians 13. Six-year-old St. Andrew member and niece, Isla Saidler, will serve Aunt Tikvah as her flower girl.
Worship check-in
If you worship on-site, please fill out the Connection Card attached to your worship folder. Online worshipers, please continue to check in here.

Nurture
Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others
Fall Growth Groups
Are you ready to join a St. Andrew Growth Group? The fall lineup is set. Sign up in the atrium or online. For more on St. Andrew Growth Groups, click here.
Grow in Grace
Living without fear—doesn’t that sound appealing? God’s Word can get you there. Join your St. Andrew brothers and sisters for Grow in Grace, and learn how to live without fear. This four-week series continues August 20 at 9:30 AM in the sanctuary. All who attend will be given a copy of the book No Fear Year written by Pastor Mike Novotny. Childcare will be provided in the gym. If you missed the first session, no worries. Join us for session two.
College Students
Jesus loves college students and wants your college student to remain close to him. St. Andrew wants that too. We have a team that sends love and encouragement to college students three times a year. You can help us by sending your child’s college address to mark.kjenstad@st-andrew-online.org. WELS Campus Ministry exists to keep a strong connection between college students and Christ. Check it out.
Impact
There are no sections in Scripture that speak more highly of Jesus Christ than the middle verses of Colossians 1. Listen to Professor Kyle Bitter from Luther Preparatory School talk about how the apostle Paul lays out the supremacy of Christ. You can listen to Impact here or on popular podcast platforms by searching “Kjenstad Impact.”
Ministries for Children
Plugged into Jesus and Musikgarten return Sunday, September 10, and PowerHour returns September 1. Stop by the table outside Mr. Kjenstad’s office to learn more about these nurture ministries.

Service & Outreach
Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others
Nondriving member in need of rides
If you live in the Lodi area or really enjoy driving, please consider helping a St. Andrew member get to and from worship. She would be very grateful for any assistance, however frequent. Contact Pastor Clinton to help.
Golf outing and dinner with Resurrection Lutheran Church
Resurrection Lutheran Church, a sister of St. Andrew in Verona, has a golf outing, social, and dinner planned for September 10 at Pioneer Pointe Golf Course. You can have a good time whether you golf well, not so well, or not at all. Find more information and register here.
Service opportunity | donation deliverer
St. Andrew collects food items for a local pantry on an ongoing basis. We are looking for someone to keep an eye on the donation barrel and periodically run it to the pantry less than a mile from St. Andrew. If interested, contact Pastor Clinton.
August Monthly Mission Partner
The Love of Christ is St. Andrew’s compassion ministry to the community. It is one way we help those in need. This aid can be manpower or financial assistance. Either way, we show the love of Christ by helping not out of obligation, but out of thanksgiving for Christ’s love.

Westside Christian School
A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word
Middle school classroom assistant
Westside Christian School is looking for a part-time middle school classroom assistant for the 2023-24 school year. Classroom assistants support our lead teachers by preparing materials, working with small groups of students on instructional tasks, and supervising students in study hall. Candidates would ideally have experience working with children in an educational setting, demonstrate a willingness to cooperate with other adults, and have a joy for supporting students of all ages. The schedule would ideally be Monday – Friday from 12:00 – 3:30 PM, but the position can be somewhat flexible. Contact Meredith Pucci for further information and to receive a complete position description.
God’s Gifts at Westside
Pastor Hunter and Principal Pucci led a workshop called “God’s gifts at Westside Christian School” for 35 of our new WCS parents on August 13. This workshop is a way for families to learn more about the Christian beliefs and teachings that will be present in the classrooms at Westside. We look forward to welcoming all of their students very soon! |
