This Sunday

I’m sinking
Have you ever cried out, “I’m sinking!”? If you were sinking in water or quicksand, you probably added, “Help me!” If you were sinking in debt, you may have been seeking a sympathetic ear or financial advice. The author of Psalm 130 was sinking in guilt and shame. But he doesn’t cry out for help. He cries out for mercy. Immerse yourself in Psalm 130 this week, let God speak to you, and then come into community with God’s people and find his response to our cry, “I’m sinking.”

Events and ministry news needing immediate attention

Moving day
This Sunday, August 15, we will be tearing down the gym worship setup and moving all of the furniture back to the sanctuary. Westside Christian School will also be putting together furniture and moving some of the classrooms. There will be many ways to serve that day! Instructions will be given at the end of 10:30 AM worship or see the instruction board in the atrium when you arrive. Areas to move and the point people to look for include:

  • Music corner: Brandon Brickner
  • AV & video cameras: Jared Dammann & Dan Wasmer
  • Altar furniture & Altar Care room: Sue Martalock
  • Gym stage & Usher corner: Rachel Martalock
  • Lights: Kris Howard
  • Sanctuary chairs: Kristen & Madison Kremer
  • School furniture: Stacy Bernd & Meredith Pucci

Welcome, Curt
Curt Kephart has volunteered to serve us until we call a new worker for Service and Outreach. Curt has enjoyed serving the many leaders and willing workers who make St. Andrew what it is. His career in administration and teaching makes him a good fit. His love for Jesus and his Word have been a blessing to us over the years. Spend just a few minutes with Curt and you know not only is he well-suited for this role, but he really enjoys it! Thank you, Curt, for your service.

Welcome, Ron
Our Board of Directors engaged Ron Kerr to develop a part-time paid position for finance and HR. After a month of study, Ron agreed to fill the role himself, at least temporarily. Ron’s career as a CPA in government and banking have prepared him to serve us well. He’s “hit the ground running” by relieving our over-burdened volunteer treasurer (Scott Kornstedt) and assistant treasurer (Todd Ninman), serving as point-person for our annual audit and seeing to the salary and benefits needs of new employees and called workers. Ron’s heart for the mission of St. Andrew makes him a great fit for the role of Financial Administrator. By the way, a generous family of St. Andrew has underwritten the salary for this position for three years.

Growth Group
Now is the time to sign up for a St. Andrew Growth Group. The next few weekends, you’ll have an opportunity to check out the fall lineup of Growth Groups in the atrium and online. Sign-up begins August 15. Our Growth Groups meet at different times, on different days, and in different places. Pray about it and then find one that works for you. Growth Groups provide an opportunity to grow in your relationship with the Lord and your church family. You’ll join a group of 8 – 12 people for 12 weeks. Fall Growth Groups begin the week of September 12. God bless your growing!

Card shower
God has opened the door for us to add new teachers in response to a growing school. We will install Karl Kuschel, Tammy Mielke, Lisa Myhre, and Valerie Weiss in worship on August 22. Let’s welcome them to St. Andrew and the Westside family with a card shower. Cards of encouragement and/or gift cards to help them get set up or to a favorite local restaurant are all welcomed. Please drop your cards in the card boxes in the atrium now through August 22. Let’s show them some St. Andrew love! If you aren’t on-site you are more than welcome to mail a card to St. Andrew, and we will put it in the appropriate box.

Worship

Resources and opportunities for you to worship

Sanctuary timeline
We are still on track for our first services to be in the sanctuary August 19/22! You may remember when we first moved into the gym, and over the course of the following weeks and months, you continued to see changes and improvements. The same will be true as we move into the sanctuary, finalize renovations, and make tweaks to the new setup. To God be the glory!

Worship Check-in
Please let us know that you were with us for worship. You can do so on our website or by going here.

Weekend worship songs
Preview some of the songs we will use for worship this weekend here. Obviously, ours won’t sound exactly like this, but listening to the links provided will certainly help you be more comfortable participating in the service.
His Mercy Is More” by Matt Papa, Matt Boswell
Lord Have Mercy (Trisagion)” by Fernando Ortega
By Grace Alone” by David Ward
I Will Wait for You (Psalm 130)” by Jordan Kauflin, Matt Merker, Keith Getty, Stuart Townend

Milestones
Colin Hoffman and Kaitlin Dunn were married last Saturday. We’re grateful for the blessing of the worshipful atmosphere in the gym that allowed their family and friends to worship with them. We’re also grateful that the threatening tornado skirted around their reception barn in Arena!

Nurture

Ways to be connected to Jesus throughout the week in your personal life and with others

Impact
What do you have that is yours and not yours at the same time? No, this is not a riddle. It’s truth from God’s Word. Listen to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary President Earle Treptow on this week’s Impact. Find the link here or search “Kjenstad Impact” wherever you find podcasts. Previous episodes are also available.

FUEL
The “L” in FUEL stands for learning, as in learning from God’s Word. FUEL is returning to weekly gatherings after Labor Day to learn truths from the Word. These will be in-person at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. We will also cover the F (have fun), the U (use our gifts to serve), and the E (encourage each other). FUEL is for all St. Andrew high school students.

20-Somethings
Join us for another fun time! It’s called “Tunes and Takeout” at Hilldale Shopping Center. We’ll meet there at noon on Saturday, August 22. Here are more details. This is a new St. Andrew group—if you are in your 20s, you’re invited! Contact Levi Schriefer with your questions.

PETT
Getting young people prepared for the Lord’s Supper and confirmed in their faith is a team effort between home and church. PETT (Parents Equipped to Teach) is a St. Andrew partnership that begins in grade 6. We are holding an orientation for parents new to PETT on Sunday, August 15, at 9:30 AM in room 108. Contact Pastor Hunter or Mr. KJ with your questions. Childcare is available with Jessica Kjenstad that morning in room 105.

College addresses needed
Will you or your child be attending college this upcoming year? We stay in touch with our college students so we can continue to serve them. Please email Mr. KJ with your updated college address or fill out an info card in the atrium and put it in the drop box.

Children’s ministries returning
St. Andrew’s children’s ministries look forward to welcoming kids back to in-person sessions with opening day Sunday, September 12. Registration for kids from Pre-K3 – grade 8 opens soon. A fun-filled year ahead with games, videos, music, crafts, and Jesus is planned! Stay tuned for any pandemic protocol which may be required, and we look forward to serving your family!

Do you love Jesus and kids? Consider choosing one or more of the following ways to serve: greeter or game leader (“Launch”), Bible leader (“Learn”), application activity (“Live”), or support staff with Musikgarten, pre-K3 – kindergarten kids, or grades 1 – 6. So many options! Reach out today to Jane Dew.

Musikgarten: Babies and toddlers with a caregiver are welcome to this Sunday-morning ministry! Certified Musikgarten leader Karen Hong will teach Jesus through interactive music and rhythm activities. Questions? Contact Karen Hong.

Plugged into Jesus: This is our children’s ministry that now serves kids Pre-K3 – grade 6. Preschool and kindergarten kids will meet in a self-contained classroom with grades 1 – 6 in the gym. Questions? Contact Jane Dew.

Middle school: Grades 7 – 8 form an independent ministry this year! Bible study, life application, and activities will anchor faith in the hearts of middle school students. Contact Lance Hill with questions.

Service & Outreach

Opportunities for you to live your faith and love for Jesus by sharing Jesus with others

Service & Outreach
Thank you to all who participated in our open forum conversations about how we might staff for leadership of our Service and Outreach ministry. We had good attendance at all sessions and found the input helpful. The Board of Directors will now take the input to heart, pray over it, and determine the next steps. We will continue to update you in the Weekly as we process how God might lead us to serve in his kingdom here on earth. We are blessed with many dedicated volunteers at St. Andrew. Thank you for your faith and dedication to this ministry.

Building dedication
Plan to celebrate our new facility addition the weekend of Sunday, August 29, 2021.

We are excited to invite you to be a part of this special day which tentatively includes the following schedule:

  • Worship and dedication—all three services (Thursday 7:00 PM,
    Sunday 8:00 & 10:30 AM)
  • Ribbon cutting and facility tours—11:45 AM
  • Picnic lunch—12:00 PM
  • Also . . . fly high in the sky! Adults and children will have the opportunity to fly kites.

St. Andrew is filled with gratitude toward God and your generosity, for the fields are ripe!

Coffee is served
We hope to begin serving coffee between worship services starting this fall, but we need a person to coordinate our volunteer team to make this happen.  If you are organized and have a passion for coffee, please let Curt Kephart know.

We will comply with requirements for public gatherings and respect public health guidance.

The grass is always greener . . . when it is watered
Our Property team is looking for assistance in watering our new sod and trees. After August 18, the newly planted grass and trees become our responsibility. We have had some nice rain, so the grass is coming up, but rain may not come this fall when it is needed. Having someone checking on this and attending to it would be great. We have the hoses and sprinklers, so we just need someone to move them around and turn on the water. We will keep doing this until they become dormant. Please reach out to Curt Kephart to volunteer.

Mission news
Our Mission Madison team is sharing their awesome experience in service and outreach during worship this week and will provide a few highlights of their mission work.

Next year’s mission trips are already in the planning phase. Would you be interested in a shorter version of a mission opportunity? Our Mission leadership team is exploring additional opportunities like “Mini-Micro-Mission” days where it may involve just a one-day experience. If interested in learning more about this potential ministry, please contact Curt Kephart.

Westside Christian School

A ministry of St. Andrew, preparing students for academic success and lives of Christian service founded on God’s Word

Coaches needed
Do you have a passion for cross country or volleyball? Do you enjoy sharing the love of sports with kids? Westside Christian School is looking for adult volunteers who will help guide our young athletes this fall. Our sports team schedules are organized around the coach’s availability, and we typically like to have at least two adults to assist with each team. We currently need a B team (4th and 5th grade) volleyball head coach and assistant coach, as well as a head coach and assistant coach for cross county. Reach out to our athletic director, Jack Murphy, to learn more..
